Poker Rules Variations in Different Casinos
One cannot say that when one has entered one casino, he has seen all casinos. Aside from the physical appearance of the casinos and gambling houses, these establishments differ from each other based on the specific rules they have on certain games. For example, one casino may have a set of rules for betting in the game of poker which is different from the set of rules of another casino.
This implies that a poker player who has been playing in one casino may find that when he enters another casino, the specific rules that he had been following before no longer applies. Therefore, it is a good idea for the poker player, who enters a new casino or card room for the first time, to ask the poker manager to explain in detail the poker rules especially those about betting.
To give the poker player an idea about betting variations, here are some examples.
- Spread-limit games - In these games, the betting is not based on fixed increments. That is, the bets and raises may be any amount within the range of the established limits. For example, if the poker game is $5-10 spread-limit, this implies that during the first two rounds, the players may bet or raise any amount up to a maximum of $5. And in the last two rounds, the players may bet or raise any amount up to $10.
- No raising caps - A "raising cap" is the maximum number of raises that are allowed during a betting round. Most casinos have a raising cap of three. That is, only a maximum of three raises are allowed. After that, no more raises will be recognized. But in some casinos, the raising cap is removed when there are only two remaining players. These two players, who are head-to-head, may raise as many times as they want, perhaps in an attempt to increase the pot or to make the other one fold.
- Check-raise - A check raise happens when the poker player checks and then raises. Such is allowed in many poker card rooms, but there are a handful of casinos that ban check-raises. Thus, the poker player must ask beforehand if a check-raise is permitted in the casino.
- No rake - A few casinos do not have a rake. But how do these casinos earn profits for hosting the poker games? The last player who acts in the betting round or the player on the button is the one who will pay the house. He will pay an amount which is equivalent to the big blind. As a privilege, this player sees the flop without betting more money.
