Poker Books - Caro's Book of Poker Tells
Caro's Book of Poker Tells
Sooner or later you will hear about a poker book called "Caro's Book of Poker Tells." It is one of the most widely read poker books of all time and every serious player is expected to be familiar it. Caro's Book of Tells is the "bible" of poker tells - those patterns in a poker player's behavior that give you clues about what kind of hand they may be holding. If you want to know about poker tells, read Caro's masterpiece.
Mike Caro
Mike Caro, the author of Caro's Book of Poker Tells, is the "mad genius" of the game. He is a professional poker player (considered one of the best draw poker players ever), writer, consultant, theorist and lecturer. His book on poker tells is so exhaustive and definitive that more than 20 years after its debut, the book remains the standard work on the topic. Few other volumes about poker tells have been published since almost nothing new can be added to what Caro has presented.
Book Description
Caro's Book of Poker Tells divides poker tells into several categories, mainly "Tells from the Unaware" or unintentional tells (mannerisms and instinctive responses) and "Tells from Actors" (deliberate or false tells intended to deceive). Caro tells us that unintentional tells are natural and often easy to overlook, whereas acting tells are artificial and dramatized.
You will learn that virtually everything a player does can serve as a poker tell: betting, looking at cards, stacking chips, exposing cards, staring at other players, tone of voice, breathing, and so on. All these give clues to one who knows. Each tell is accompanied by one or more photographs, detailed explanations and strategy advice.
The author explains that the correct use of poker tells leads to two things: smaller losses and bigger wins. When you know your opponent is strong and you are weak, you can fold and save some chips. If you know your opponent is weak and you have a chance of defeating him, you can take a risk that you would not otherwise have made. So you lose less and win more.
Caro gives an approximate dollar value per hour of each tell, which shouldn't be taken too seriously. He also gives a reliability grade to each tell based on the player's level of experience. For example, a tell may be 97% accurate among novice players, 90% among intermediate and only 85% among veterans.
Caro's Book of Poker Tells also covers general poker tells, audible tells (including the ominous "pokerclack") and how to select a chair in a poker table. Caro's Laws of Tells should be memorized by every aspiring poker pro.
Summary
Not everything in Caro's Book of Poker Tells is true, of course. Just like everything else human, it's not infallible. But more often than not, it is accurate and reliable. No one can do without this poker classic, especially if they are going to play in brick n' mortar casinos. Online poker players may want to play in live poker rooms too once they read Caro's Book of Poker Tells.
