The Nitty-Gritty on Holdem Poker
Poker may be a collective name for a wide assortment of similar card games but nowadays, poker is known to most people as holdem poker variant since the said variant is the predominant one played by poker aficionados all over the world and the one focused intensely upon by popular media with all of the books, movies, video games and television shows devoted to it.
That being said, it is interesting to note that popular has not always been a word to describe holdem poker. Before it has caught the attention of the poker world, the holdem variant has played second fiddle to the other poker variants that were more popular back then such as Seven Card Stud. In fact, very few casinos even bothered to offer the game to patrons since holdem poker did not enjoy a huge following among gamblers and poker aficionados.
Holdem caught on only when it was featured in movies and television shows in the latter part of the twentieth century. Holdem was fortunate to be featured in such mediums as the variant soon dominated the poker scene since it was exposed to a wider audience which immensely helped in increasing the variant's popularity.
Apart from popular media, the advent of the Internet and its subsequent widespread use all around the world also contributed to holdem poker's sudden surge of popularity as a great number of holdem players are playing the game through their computers and their Internet connection in any of the numerous virtual poker rooms that thrive throughout the whole of cyberspace.
But these factors are only adjuncts to the main reason of holdem's tremendous fame: its game play. Just like all the other poker variants, the objective of holdem is to win the pot, which is an amount of money that every player in the game has contributed to, by having the best hand there is at the table. Unlike most of the poker variants however, the game play of holdem poker involves the use of community cards, cards that are for every player to use to put up the best hand possible together with the two cards that will be dealt exclusively to them.
This distinguishing characteristic of holdem has made it a deeper and more strategic poker variant than the others. Such is the strategic component of the poker variant that a wide range of literature has been made to help players in refining their play in the game through the use of several approaches that are mostly grounded on the hard sciences such as probability and game theory.
Holdem poker has come a long way from its humble beginning to becoming the foremost way to play poker. Given that this wide recognition of the game is brought by popular media and the advancement of technology, notably Internet technology, it is still the variant's relatively unique game play and strategic aspect that draws poker aficionados and first-time card players into playing the poker variant.
