3 Card Poker Rules: Play a Game Within a Game
3 card poker is a game where players have a choice between two types of wagers. How do you decide between the two types of bets? It depends on what your win goal is and what type of bet do you think will give you the most fun.
3 card poker rules are easier than 5-hand poker, the game upon which 3 card poker rules were based. 3 card poker rules on dealing of cards, betting, and payouts are different from 5-hand poker.
Firstly, there are no rounds of drawing and betting in 3 card poker. Only 3 cards are used, and these cards are dealt after each player has made their bets. Players do not play against each other either, and playing against the dealer is a player's option.
There are two types of bet that you can play in 3 card poker: the Pair Plus wager and Ante-and-Play wager.
In Pair Plus, the player neither plays against another player nor against the dealer. Based on 3 card poker rules, a player's win shall be determined solely by the rank of their hand. Winning hands are: pair, flush, straight, three-of-a-kind, and straight flush. A pair wins the least with 1:1 payoff. A flush gives you 5:1 payoff. A straight pays off 6:1. Three of a kind pays off 25:1. Straight flush pays off 40:1.
If the player wagers on Ante, the player still has the option to play or fold after seeing their card. If the player opts to fold, the player also loses their Ante bet. If the player opts to play, the player has to place a "Play" wager. The amount of "Play" wager is the same as the value of the Ante wager.
Ante-and-Play 3 card poker rules are a bit more complicated than Pair Plus rules. In ante-and-play, there's a so-called "qualifying" rule. That is, the dealer must have, in their hand, a Queen or other card of higher value. If the dealer has none, the player wins 1:1 on their Ante wager only. The "Play" wager pushes or is given back to the player.
If there is in the dealer's hand a queen or a card of higher value, a player wins on both Ante and Play if their hand's rank is higher than the dealer's. If the player's hand is of lower value than the dealer's, the dealer collects both of the player's Ante and Play wagers.
Again, there are two sets of 3 card poker rules. One set of rules is for Play Plus wager; the other set of rules is for Ante-and-Raise wager. Knowing the specific rules for each type of wager is the first step in developing a winning tactic to playing 3 card poker.
